Spotify's Venture into Free Audiobooks for Subscribers: A New Strategy
Spotify, a major player in the streaming industry, has been revealed to be piloting a new program where its subscribers can enjoy free audiobooks. According to information leaked by The Wall Street Journal, Spotify is currently discussing details with major publishers in the United States. It is not yet clarified which titles will be available at the debut, though a broad range is expected.
Taking a glance at the past, Spotify started offering audiobooks in September 2022, which included a diversity of about 300,000 titles from authors like Stephen King to journalists such as Malcolm Gladwell. With time, the number of audiobooks on the platform has increased to over 350,000. As of now, however, Spotify audiobooks operate on a pay-per-download basis, which means subscribers need to purchase each title separately. This new program, if successful, could make audiobooks a second pillar of Spotify, alongside their music content.
Availability and Scope
The introduction of free audiobooks signifies a trial phase that will run for a limited time period. As per the Wall Street Journal, free audiobooks will gradually roll out to English-speaking nations including the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, and Australia. However, it remains unclear whether the feature will be available in Ireland and New Zealand, where Spotify audiobooks are also accessible. Spotify was contacted for further clarification on this new development.
Market Shift or Misplaced Priorities?
As pointed out by the Wall Street Journal, the market for audiobooks is growing, much like that for podcasts. However, Spotify's decision to focus more on this non-music content might risk alienating their user base, especially following the recent price hike.
The big question remains: Is Spotify ready to challenge other industry giants like Audible who have already established a stronghold in the audiobook industry? Unlike Spotify, Audible offers many amenities as part of its 30-day free trial, including a free audiobook, unlimited access to original content, and offline access to all titles. While Spotify has been promising a Hi-Res or Supremium tier for music fans, it is yet to be seen whether this expansion into the audiobook market precedes the fulfillment of their earlier promises.
