Sonos Announces Timeline for Ace Headphones’ Top Feature on Android and More Soundbars: An In-Depth Look

Newly launched Sonos Ace headphones have sparked a wave of interest thanks in large part to their impressive TV Audio Swap feature. This unique feature allows users to route their home theater's audio directly through their headphones, provided it is set up through the Sonos app. Regrettably, this feature is only currently compatible with the Sonos Arc and cannot operate with an Android phone app.

Yet, in a refreshing turn of events amidst growing frustration over app issues, Sonos is set to extend compatibility to additional devices. We anticipate that TV Audio Swap will be available to Sonos Beam Gen 1, Sonos Beam Gen 2, and the Sonos Ray by late summer or early autumn. There are also plans in store to enable Android device owners to utilize this feature as well.

Why TV Audio Swap will be worth the wait

In our extensive review of the Sonos Ace headphones, we were thoroughly impressed by the spatial audio performance and the TV Audio Swap feature. The immersive experience when watching movies was unparalleled, rivalling even the esteemed AirPods Max and outperforming other top-rated headphones in spatial audio performance. The feature worked seamlessly, without any glitches.

The extraordinary success of the TV Audio Swap lies in its versatility – it can work with any audio source connected to your TV. Be it your Apple TV 4K, your PS5, or one of the best Blu-ray players, it allows your Sonos Ace to receive it and apply excellent, lag-free, spatial audio processing and head tracking. We were quite taken by the sound, the tracking, and the ease of use: just a single press of a button on the headphones, and you've got private home theater sound.

Unfortunately, the feature is not without its limitations. As implied in its name, TV Audio Swap can only swap audio that's going from your TV to your soundbar. It does not support other audio sources that could be connected to your Sonos system, such as a turntable.

Further complicating the matter is the fact that if your soundbar happens to be a Beam or a Ray, or if your app is on Android, you would not be able to swap anything. Your premium headphones, thus, are missing one of their most essential features. We hope to see this rectified by late summer. Sonos Ace and Sonos Arc are available for purchase online.
